I upset an evangelical Christian the other day by refusing to say that I was only into Christian spirituality rather than spirituality more generally! I've just found this definition which is rather cool: 'Spiritual development is the total process by which individuals recognise and use their experiences at each stage of their development' (from the YMCA's National Council).

How does one define spirituality?
I read on this web-site a person's post about finding spirituality whilst being in what sounds like a particularly beautiful part of the English countryside. I began to wonder whether the author's feeling of tranquility, inner peace and, possibly, heightened sense of the awareness of nature was 'real' spirituality ??
I rather think it was not. Surely spirituality requires a much much greater feeling of transcendence from the thoughts of the daily world over a sustained period of time. I believe one's very Being has to be changed to the extent that all of the negative thoughts and feelings of life have been minimized to the point of virtual extinguishment. What do others think ?

Dear 'genuinelyme' - you are wrong! Spirituality is in the moment right here and right now - a glance at a sunbeam, the purr of a pussycat, the sound of children singing, the feel of a velvet sleave...it is wovern into the very fabric of our everyday lives. We can deepen our awareness and connection to something beyond our daily concerns through meditation, prayer, chanting etc etc but you don't have to become a monk (or similar) to experience spirituality. You can experience deep spirituality through serving others, being with friends and family, going for a walk in a beatuitful park or by the sea.
Hi
I totally agree and could not put it better
Peace and Blessings

Conceptual Construct of consciousness?!

Interesting phrase - food for thought! A bit obscure perhaps for the ordinary (sorry maybe there's no such thing!) person trying to be more spiritual without actually having to study books on the subject, but a great doorway to a deeper exploration of the 'consciousness' levels. I've just read a book about Krishna consciousness...which draws on the ancient Vedic wisdom of India...exciting!
